Retinas and Wallets

Following the Apple hoo-ha on Monday, I checked out the new MacBook ‘Retina’ model at an Apple Store. Noticeable things: it’s lighter but not as astoundingly light as an ‘Air’, it’s blazing fast (full reboot in 15-20 seconds), the screen is indeed crisp and lovely for text and photos which just about jump out of the screen if they are taken in bright light with strong contrast, but look completely ordinary with more typical shots. The case is precisely machined, there’s a bit of a sharp edge on the screen, which is half the thickness of a normal MB Pro. Annoyingly the power button has been made into a keyboard button and the return key made smaller as a result. I kept bashing the delete key instead which is now above it, or something like that.

Doing a price comparison using this spec: 2.6GHz processor, 8Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD

Standard MB Pro: £2,519

Retina MB Pro: £2,364 (including optional extra outboard DVD drive)

Apple must think these things through, as a result for less money you’d get a machine which is much faster, a bit lighter and has a way better screen. I’ve nearly persuaded myself, until I realise that it won’t make more productive, and will leave a fair sized hole in my wallet. Anyone else got thoughts on this? My disappointment was they didn’t make a 15″ Macbook Air, cheaper than a full fat MB Pro, without the Retina screen.

Oh and another bummer, Apple released a new maps app, and forgive me for choking, but my iPhone 4 is apparently unworthy of their turn-by-turn navigation feature, and the 3D flyover feature. The iPhone 4 being obsolete within a year is quite annoying, and we do know that TomTom runs perfectly on an iPhone 4, so what magic property is it missing? A load of pants in my opinion.

iPad 1 for sale

I have a 32GB Wifi iPad 1 for sale, it’s in ‘A’ grade condition. The screen has had a protector on it, all it’s life, and it’s lived inside the original iPad case keeping it scratch free. The unit is reset to factory conditions with the latest Apple firmware on it. From looking at other sites, on sales which have completed, I believe a current mark-to-market of £250 is reasonable. My contact details are here.

In the sale are:

  • The original box and packaging, including the cellophane cover
  • The user guide
  • The 10W charger and brand new USB lead
  • The iPad (32GB, Wifi only)
  • The original iPad cover (can’t be described as ‘A’ grade condition but there’s no tears or damage, just scuffs)
I’m in the UK, so in-person delivery is preferable, or I can ship it to you, provided you are happy to fund the charges.

Extended Mac Display / Apple TV mirroring

For anyone with a Mac and an Apple TV, a frustration is not being able to “beam” video, photos or presentations to a TV using AirPlay. Now using AirParrot all this is possible. If you want to jump ahead click the parrot below to visit the site, otherwise read on about the scenarios this enables:

  1. View your photos direct from iPhoto or Aperture on your TV, instead of going via iTunes and the clumsy photo browser (which is slow and a pain)
  2. Watch any video on your Mac, direct on your TV, e.g. using BBC iPlayer or the equivalent iTV, Channel 4 etc players – goes completely around the iTunes compatibility restriction
  3. Extend your Mac desktop – treat your TV as a second display – show PowerPoint on the TV and keep your Mac screen for other tasks. Brilliant for office presentations, provided you have a handy Apple TV, no more VGA cables.
  4. Play games on your Mac and watch them on your TV – it transmits sound too
Why on earth Apple didn’t do this sooner I don’t know – maybe Mountain Lion might solve it, but for now – I recommend getting an Apple TV and a Parrot.

UPDATE (11th March): There is a bug in AirParrot which prevents drag and drop working in any app on your Mac.Their FAQ says this:

I’m having issues with my screensaver activating or drag and drop issues
Unfortunately these issues are related to a bug with Apple’s Nvidia drivers on earlier MacBooks. The only way to remedy this is to remove the AirParrot driver or to disable your screensaver. The following Macs will have this issue when using the External Display driver in AirParrot: MacBookPro5,5 MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009), NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, MacBookPro5,4 MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2,53 GHz, Mid 2009), NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, MacBookPro5,3 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and GeForce 9400M.

I had to uninstall the software, using this procedure:
  1. Delete the App
  2. Go to ~\Library\Extensions
  3. Delete AirParrotDriver.kext & APExtFramebuffer.kext
  4. Reboot
It’s a real shame.
